AREA 19 JUNIORS COME SECOND AT NATIONALS CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Written by Ian Greaves.
Harry and I decided to go up a day early to give Benson a days rest so we were able to spend some time looking at the course which looked good but a surprising number of seniors were being caught out on number 5 the high rise house. The Saturday evening brougt a thunder storm which despite soaking Tamara and Chloe as they were walking the course, was welcome as it softened the ground at little for Sunday.
The Junior Novice Challenge comprises of teams of 4 from across the country and this year 22 teams were taking part. It is a great spectator event as the competitors first do a round of show jumps against the clock then ride straight on to a cross country course with an optimum time to aim at, with so many teams taking part from all over the country it was very busy with lots of supporters giving a great atmosphere to the occasion. The teams went in number order: ie all the number ones then the twos and so on. Tamara was trailblazer for Area 19 and her clear round around both parts of the challenge was great to watch and showed the rest of team who are all a bit younger, that it was very do-able. In fact Tamra had gone just a little quick and picked up a few penalty points(6). Chloe was next in and picked up (unusually for Chloe and Solar) 4 faults in the show jumping which did not stop her from putting in a lovely cross country round which being just under the optimum picked up a few more points giving her and Solar a very respectable total of 7.6. Shopie and Juno were third to go and put in a lovely clear round on the show jumps but she and Juno were just a bit too fast on the cross country picking up 9 penalties which still turned out to be up amongst some of the best scores of the day. Harry and Benson were last to go for the team with Benson showing his experience with a super clear round over the show jumps. Out on the cross country Harry and Benson used their experience together to put in a really confident round indeed despite Bensons 24 years they were again just a bit quick picking up 7.2 for coming in under the optimum.
As the results started to come in it was clear that the team were in the running and the critical thing that earned them a placing was none of them had picked up penalties on the cross country phase (the work they put in both preparation and walking the course and so knowing where the problems could be really paid off), except of course they all had time penalties! (to be fair to the team Aston is pretty flat and they are used Cornish up and down courses!). The results were announced and the Area 19 team were SECOND!(4 points behind the winners and 3 ahead of 3rd place).
To end up being placed second at the national finals really was quite something, there were some very good teams against them and for All team members to keep their scores below 10 penalties shows a high standard of consistent riding. Well done team it was also a pleasure to see members from different clubs working together and having fun as well!

JUNIORS DO IT AGAIN!!!
This report was kindly submitted by Ian Greaves
Team Members - Harry Greaves, Emma Howard, Katie Howard, Alex Reeve.

Cornwall
Trec fielded a strong junior team who had ridden together before, and the day
started well when Alex Reeve put in a lovely round to get them under way, the
rest of the team followed with good rounds, all looked in contention both as a
team and as individuals. The results bore this out with the Cornwall Trec team
winning the class, and as individuals they netted a second for Emma Howard, as
well as Harry Greaves 3rd and Alex Reeve picking up a 4th
Junior
Novice Qualifier
Again the
team worked well together and easily made it through to the final jump off
which was against St Austell Bay Riding Club. In the jump off each rider did
their job and kept the pressure on St Austell Bay. Emma Howard riding third put
in a great round to put Cornwall Trec in a strong position with just the last
riders from each club to go. Harry Greaves riding last for Cornwall Trec
knowing they were well placed decided to try and nail the victory and pushed on
his pony Master Benson coming in clear in a cracking time. For the second time of
the day Cornwall Trec picked up the winning rosettes as a team and Harry
Greaves winning the individual put the icing on the cake for a great day for
the junior team.
Next stop
the national finals!!

Senior Team Report
The Senior Team consisting of Ben Freeman, Janet Jones and Emily Langton did a great job in both classes and just missed out on the placings.
Cornwall TREC Group would like to thank all of the Team members, horses and supporters for doing a great job. Also a huge well done to all the Teams that took part.
Area
Qualifier 12th October 2008
The Area 19 Cross Country qualifiers took place at ChyvertonPark over the newly opened cross-country
course. It was quite a straight forward course, with no real technical
questions, however, the beautifully dressed obstacles where up to height
proving to be a good thing for our junior team, as they have, once again
qualified to represent Cornwall Trec Group at The Festival of the Hunter to be
held at Aston Le Walls, Northamptonshire next May. This should mean that the
course at Aston will not be too daunting for our Juniors. The team consisted of
Sophie Chaplin, Donna Sturdy, Harry Greaves, and Emma Howard who stepped in at
the final hour to replace Alex Reeve who was unable to make the event. A big
thank you to Emma for that as she was later riding in the pairs with her sister
Katie.
Once again Donna Sturdy did the Club proud by competing as
an individual in the Open Class on her very talented horse Coconut Ice.Donna competed on Ice last year in the pairs,
having qualified she then went on to represent the club at Aston le Walls with
Jess Sweet. This year she will have to
make the journey to Aston as an individual, but will be well supported by the
junior novice team, as they will all be there together. Well-done Donna. The
junior open class was re installed into the British Riding Clubs schedule last
year after it had been shelved for several years. The juniors have to ride the
same height and course as the seniors, maximum 1 meter with a speed of 490 mpm.
Having a course as good as the new one at Chyverton can only serve to help our
competitors when they are then faced with the challenge of a course that is
designed for a National Event.
Jessica Sweet and
Charlotte Tucker entered the senior pairs class and as individuals in the
senior open, but unfortunately Jess and Charlotte
did not qualify this year.
Once again the juniors really helped to represent the Club
in the pairs with two teams entered, Emma and Katie Howard; Donna Sturdy and
Abi Bate. Well done to all for not only representing your club but for doing so
well.
Come on all you seniors
We need your support for the senior teams. Coming up in
January and February are next year’s qualifiers. We will soon be looking for
team members to take part in the indoor dressage competitions, and the indoor
show jumping. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could get a senior team to qualify
for these events and represent your club at the nationals just as the juniors
have done!
If there is anybody out there who would like to have a go,
please contact me, Penny Clifford, 01637 877403.If I can get enough interest I will try and
arrange some training before the event, but I need the commitment before I can
arrange that. Just in case you are not sure of what is involved, your horse has
to be flu vaccinated and this means that the dates of the vaccination comply
with the jockeyclub rules. Information
is obtainable on the British Riding Clubs Web site:-
So if you would like to be part of a team, or an individual,
and really get involved with the whole team ethos then get in touch it really
can be a very exciting and rewarding experience and will give you the
opportunity of meeting other members. If you are a member of a team that is
fortunate enough to succeed in qualifying you will have the added excitement of
not only representing your club at National level, but you will be involved in
the unique experience of competing with other Riding Club member from around
the whole country and will get to see how a big event is run. This coupled with the experience of travelling
with friends, and enjoying the “party” atmosphere that accompanies a trip away,
having fun with like minded people……In the past our qualifying teams and
individuals have competed at such esteemed venues as the new International
Arena at Hartpury College in Gloucester; the National Championships,
Lincolnshire showground; and the Dressage Championships at Addington Manor, to
name but a few. Of course, a trip of this nature costs money, and if we get
enough support it is hoped that next season we will try and run some events to
fund raise for the teams, but this takes man power, energy and commitment.
